Leadership and Mentoring

Kirk Harris

What is mentoring and how valuable is it in leadership. It is extremely important to grow a mentoring environment for you team. We will discuss how to become a quality mentor and how to teach our students to seek out a qualified mentor that will help them grow into a  top notch EMS provider. Finally we will discuss our role as healthcare leaders and how it is our responsibility to grow competent healthcare providers and leaders for future generations of  Emergency Medical Technicians.

Emotional and Social Intelligence

        Chris Nollette

This session centers around the neuroscience of human relationships and how they impact our personal and professional lives.  One of the greatest challenges that society faces is how to deal with ourselves and play well in the sandbox with others - this session will give us a better understanding and some basic strategies to create understanding and make us star performers at home and in the workplace.

The Twilight Zone: Sleep Deprivation and EMS

                Chris Nollette

This session brings the participant a better understanding of the science of sleep.  In a profession that requires the frequent and extended interruption of sleep the EMS community needs to weigh short term and long term effects of this important biological indicator.  Are we killing ourselves and/or putting each other at risk for multiple health problems? Come find out the answer - you may be very surprised.

Does Your Test Item Test What You Think It Is Testing

David Page

Are you 100% confident in your multiple choice questions?  Do you argue over dumb questions with your students?  Test item construction and validation is an art form.  Come to this session and you will learn to write defensible items that help separate the students who just memorized the material, from those that can treat patients and solve problems. ** If attending this session please bring at least five questions that you might use on a test to see if they convey what you think they would to your students.

How long is long enough? How good is good enough?

David Page

Are you confident that you can describe and measure competency in EMS? This inspirational presentation will challenge some of the old paradigms and present new ways of thinking about EMS competency.

EMS Instructor and Program Director Update

Donna Tidwell

The session will provide updates on current standards and any changes in policies and required forms. It will also review recent role changes and discuss recommended changes for the NREMT exam. Donna is the Director of Emergency Medical Services Personnel Licensure and Education for the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of EMS

CLOSING KEYNOTE – FRIDAY

The Pursuit of Passion

Dr. Christopher F. Nollette and Donna Tidwell

EMS attracts passionate professionals but the stress of our profession can snuff out our passionate flame and reduce it to a flicker.  It is critical that we reignite our passion and fan the flames of our soul so that our journey can fulfill the promise that our destiny has in store for us.  Being passionate and having passion for something are two different things.  We believe strongly that passion FOR something must be cultivated and nurtured in order for it to grow and become infectious.  In this inspirational and entertaining presentation the speakers share their passion for teaching and learning.  Together they will explore what passion is, what it looks like in an EMS educator and what it look like in action in the classroom.
